"The Chicago Sessions Tour"
@The Heights Theatre

Friday 6/16/2023 8:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Rodney Crowell Biography-Mark Deming] Rodney Crowell first gained widespread recognition as a leader of country's new traditionalist movement in the mid-'80s, though he was a figure with roots and ambitions extending far beyond the movement's perimeter. Fusing the sensibility of the Texas singer/songwriter community with a sound that honored country's past but added a rock & roll punch, Crowell's first success was as a writer and a sideman, spending three years as part of Emmylou Harris & the Hot Band and penning a handful of tunes for the vocalist. Crowell produced several fine albums for Rosanne Cash (they were married from 1979 to 1992), and also penned hits for Crystal Gayle, Bob Seger, and Highway 101 before enjoying a commercial breakthrough with 1988's album Diamonds & Dirt. 1992's Life Is Messy and 2001's The Houston Kid found Crowell moving into more personal territory, and as he stepped away from major labels to independent imprints, he pleased both critics and fans with smart and insightful releases such as 2014's Tarpaper Sky, 2021's Triage, and 2023's The Chicago Sessions.

Rodney Crowell
"Loving You Is the Only Way to Fly"

Rodney Crowell was born in Houston, Texas on August 7, 1950. Raised in a musical family, he formed his first band, the Arbitrators, while in high school, and in 1972 he moved to Nashville to become a professional musician. There, he struck up friendships with fellow Texas-bred singer/songwriters Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Crowell's first big break came while he was performing as a lounge singer, where one of his acoustic sets was heard by Jerry Reed. Crowell's own "You Can't Keep Me Here in Tennessee" caught the ear of Reed and his manager, and two days later, Reed recorded the song after signing Crowell to his publishing company. In 1975, he moved to Los Angeles to join Emmylou Harris & the Hot Band as a guitarist, and soon became one of her primary songwriters; among the Crowell compositions Harris first popularized were "Til I Gain Control Again," "Ain't Livin' Long Like This," "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight," and "Bluebird Wine." In 1977, Crowell exited the Hot Band to form his own group, the Cherry Bombs, and in 1978 released his first album, Ain't Living Long Like This; surprisingly, given that he had built his growing reputation as a songwriter, his first two minor hits -- "Elvira" and "(Now and Then, There's) A Fool Such as I" -- were both covers.

Jill Scott

Friday 6/16/2023 8:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Andy Kellman] A poetic R&B powerhouse who handles slower, sensual material and bright anthems of pride and self-empowerment with equal aptitude, Jill Scott introduced herself at the beginning of the millennium with the Top 20 and multi-platinum Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 (2000). This debut also resulted in four Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist, an indication of the promise the singer has fulfilled and overshot throughout her career. After a pair of Top Ten, gold-selling sequels in the Words and Sounds series, Beautifully Human (2004) and The Real Thing (2007), and a Grammy win for the latter album's "Cross My Mind," Scott topped the Billboard 200 with her fourth and fifth LPs, The Light of the Sun (2011) and Woman (2015). Her substantial collaborative work is highlighted by three more Grammy-winning recordings: the Roots' "You Got Me," which she co-wrote, in addition to George Benson and Al Jarreau's version of "God Bless the Child," and Lupe Fiasco's "Daydreamin,'" both of which feature her vocals. Her extensive synchronous work as an actor includes multiple Tyler Perry projects, main roles in series such as The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, and Black Panther, and an NAACP Image Award-winning role in Sins of the Mother.

Jill Scott
The Way

From North Philadelphia, born and raised, Jill Scott planned on becoming a high school English teacher. However, she left behind her secondary education studies at Temple University to pursue theater, joined a local troupe, and eventually landed a role in a Canadian production of Rent. Back in her hometown, while reading poetry at the October Gallery, she caught the attention of the Roots' Questlove.

Chingo Bling
House of Blues

Friday 6/16/2023 7:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Cyril Cordor] By selling mixtapes and CDs straight out the trunk of his car, Houston rapper Pedro Herrera III rose to prominence in the Southwest and among Latin rap fans, doubling as the Mexican/Chicano self-parodying alter ego Chingo Bling. Donning the stereotypical getup of a vaquero (Latino farmhand) -- cowboy ostrich boots and oversized belt buckles -- Chingo personifies his fun-filled, Spanglish lyrics and rap music jokes, sporting aliases like the Ghetto Vaquero and the Tamale Kingpin. Herrera's family emigrated from Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, Mexico, to Houston, Texas, where Herrera was born. To keep him away from the city's turbulent city life, his parents sent him away to the prestigious Peddie School, a private boarding school in New Jersey, on a scholarship. He returned to Texas to attend Trinity University in San Antonio, majoring in marketing and business administration. While at Trinity, he first concocted the Chingo Bling persona as part of an on-air routine for his disc jockey gig at the KRTU student radio station.

Herrera first began selling Chingo mixtapes around 2001 at local stores, flea markets, and wherever else in Texas he could find an audience. His big break came when he seized the opportunity to appear on Power 106's Pocos Pero Locos show in Los Angeles. The syndicated show got his music played throughout the Southwest on Chicano rap forums. Self-released on his own Big Chile Enterprises label, his first album, 2004's The Tamale Kingpin, was heavily anticipated, but by the release of his second album, the following year's 4 President, Chingo had become a regional star. His record sales did not measure up to breakthrough artists on major labels, but his comedic appeal garnered widespread attention, including features on MTV and Telemundo as well as in several hip-hop publications. Some of the attention, however, came from critics who thought of him as a racist caricature of Mexican/Chicano culture. And it didn't help that Herrera's Big Chile imprint was also producing products like Chingo bobblehead dolls and hot sauce. Nonetheless, the local hoopla over Chingo translated into a heated bidding war among major labels like Bad Boy, Universal, Capitol, and Atlantic. Asylum/Warner won out, signing Big Chile to an $80 million dollar distribution deal in 2006.
