Downstairs

Friday 9/1/2023 6:30 PM

Akaash Singh is a nationally touring stand up comedian, podcaster, and actor. This weekend he performs in the Bayou City at White Oak downstairs.

[From akaashsingh.com] Early in his career he appeared in many shows including MTV’s Guy Code and Wild’n Out, Netflix’s Brown Nation, and HBO’s The Leftovers. After finding success in TV, he pivoted his focus more on growing the hugely successful show "Flagrant," co-created with good friend and fellow comedian, Andrew Schulz, along with touring and his stand up career. Thus far in 2022, Akaash released two specials in two months: "Bring Back Apu" and "Back to Back: The Crowdwork Special," quickly garnering over two million views and leading to his debut appearance on The Joe Rogan Podcast. He plans on releasing another stand up special in the coming year.

Bad Omens
@Bayou Music Center

Friday 9/1/2023 7:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Marcy Donelson] Bad Omens are a Los Angeles metalcore band who traffic in punishing breakdowns and anthemic choruses that evoke contemporaries like Bring Me the Horizon and Periphery. Their first album, 2016's Bad Omens, hit the Billboard rock and independent charts, as did 2019's Finding Go Before God Finds Me. The group's high-contrast, pandemic-inspired third album, The Death of Peace of Mind, followed in 2022.

The band was born in 2013 from a handful of solo demos by lead singer Noah Sebastian, who eventually added longtime friends Nicholas Ryan (guitar) and Nick Ruffilo (bass) to the fold. A friend of Riquier's, Joakim "Jolly" Karlsson, joined on guitar, and drummer Nick Folio was added after submitting samples over the Internet. Sumerian Records was impressed with the songwriting on the band's early demos and signed them in 2015.

Bad Omens quickly grew a fan base with singles including "Exit Wounds" and "The Worst in Me." Based on an unhealthy relationship of Sebastian's but "universal to all bad habits," their eponymous debut landed on the Billboard rock, hard rock, independent, and Heatseekers album charts upon release in 2016. The group hit all the same charts again with 2019's Finding God Before God Finds Me, which climbed to number seven on the hard rock list. Its singles "Limits" and "Never Know" kept Bad Omens in the Top 30 of the Mainstream Rock Airplay for several months in 2020 and 2021. Following a forced break from touring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they returned with the triumphant and uncompromising The Death of Peace of Mind in 2022.

Luna Li and Dengue Fever
In Concert
@Miller Outdoor Theatre

Friday 9/1/2023 8:00 PM

[From Miller Outdoor Theatre] This Labor Day weekend, join Asia Society Texas is please to bring you a night of incredible music by stand-out artists, including Luna Li’s gorgeous indie rock dreamscapes and Dengue Fever’s electric update of Cambodian psych-rock.

“Luna Li’s debut album, Duality, is a gorgeous pop anthem that introduces a potential dominant name in the lo-fi, DIY pop game. Bringing in sounds from sub genres including psychedelic pop, bedroom pop, indie pop, and art pop, Luna has crafted the perfect album to throw on during a rainy night drive.” Nick Allen, Still Listening.

“[Dengue Fever’s music]…is like being transported through a steamy, humid time warp where Haight-Ashbury was a swinging suburb of Phnom Penh in the ’60s as oscillating Farsifa and fuzztone guitar languidly drift under and around Chhom Nimol’s beautifully hypnotic vocals.” Alan Brown, PopMatters

Matute
"The Party Monster Tour"
@Smart Financial Center

Friday 9/1/2023 8:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Thom Jurek] Matute is a Mexican pop "covers" group formed in 2007. The sextet is led by singer and producer Jorge D'Alessio, son of actors Lupita D'Alessio and Jorge Vargas. Conceived as an act to pay tribute to the music of the '80s from both English- and Spanish-speaking acts, their repertoire consists of bilingual versions of hits from the era, often in medley format. D'Alessio created the group after coordinating sponsored musical tours for a major refreshment company, where he met many musicians and singers. Named for a cartoon character from the kids' television show Don Gato y Sus Gang, the band played its first show to a mere 14 people.

Their first recording was a cover of "Sal de Mi Piel" with the Mexican singer Belinda, chosen because its original was cut by RBD, who had recently split. Their self-financed debut album, Ochenterizzimo, was recorded in Italy and featured covers of Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It," the Outfield's "Your Love," Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon," and Marco Antonio Solis' "Tú Me Vuelves Loco." They commenced their first live themed show, entitled The 80's Box Show, at a nightspot south of Mexico City. Mexican pop singer Anahí (formerly of RBD) checked out the album and concert. Impressed, she invited them to open first her Brazilian and then her global tours.

With the money they earned, Matute began creating a show called La Guerra de los 80's, bigger, brighter, and more dynamic than the first.   Read more @All Music.com (Click Here)
