Lakecia Benjamin
and Phoenix
@Miller Outdoor Theatre

Friday 9/8/2023 8:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Thom Jurek] Lakecia Benjamin is a New York-based saxophonist, arranger, composer, and educator. Her music offers a unique meld of R&B, several strains of jazz, and funk. Her warm, resonant tone -- that has been compared to Johnny Griffin's -- lends itself to any form of music she chooses to play. In addition to honing her chops early with Clark Terry and later Terri Lyne Carrington, she is also a noted accompanist for vocalists -- among them Gregory Porter and Theo Crocker. Retox, her 2012 leader debut, offered a beat-conscious set of soul and funk covers and originals produced by Ben Kane. Benjamin played on "Right on Brotha," the closing track from Robert Glasper's Everything's Beautiful in 2018, a collection of reimagined Miles Davis tracks. Her sophomore date, Rise Up for Ropeadope, contained a Prince-inspired series of original jazz-funk jams. In 2020, she released Pursuance: The Coltranes. The widely acclaimed set contained six tunes each by Alice and John Coltrane, with Benjamin leading a large cast that included former Coltrane sideman Reggie Workman. In 2023 she returned with the star-studded Phoenix. Produced by Carrington, it wed jazz, funky soul, R&B, and hip-hop with an all-star cast.

Benjamin was born in New York City and raised in Manhattan's predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhood. She played recorder in grade school and junior high where she also began writing songs and lyrics. She won admission to the Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. It was there she began playing saxophone in earnest. She picked it up quickly and after graduating joined the renowned jazz program at New York's New School University.

At New School she studied with jazz veterans including Billy Harper, Workman, Buster Williams, and Gary Bartz. Bartz proved an important mentor. He introduced her to training technical exercise techniques while facilitating her interest in the music of jazz saxophonists including Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Jackie McLean. She also played in and performed with Clark Terry's Young Titans of Jazz, and some of Workman's ensembles. While struggling to make ends meet, she won paying gigs with Missy Elliott and Alicia Keys, widening her approach. These influences made their presence known on Benjamin's Motema leader debut, Retox, in 2010. The unusual set included Benjamin's Soul Squad band backing a number of singers and rappers in a host of originals and covers, some of which didn't feature her horn at all. She explained in an interview that she didn't want to be heard as merely an instrumentalist and soloist, but as an arranger and bandleader, too. She also won opportunities to play and tour with a wide array of artists including former Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali, the David Murray Big Band, vocalist Vanessa Rubin, and guitarist James Blood Ulmer. Her deep jazz roots and reputation for hard yet innovative work, made her a first-call sidewoman, arranger, and horn section leader, and she landed a touring gig with Anita Baker. Friday 9/8/2023 9:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Andy Kellman] Shooting from obscurity to fame as the featured artist on Disclosure's "Latch" in 2012, a global smash hit that showcased their distinctively stirring high tenor, Sam Smith has since become one of pop's most prominent balladeers. Taking cues from soul belters like Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan, followers such as Amy Winehouse and Adele, and their own church upbringing, Smith effectively arrived as a headliner with 2014's In the Lonely Hour. Multi-platinum in the singer's native U.K. and the U.S., the album also garnered Best New Artist and three additional Grammys among a slew of accolades. Smith followed up with 2017's The Thrill of It All, a heartsick album favoring Southern soul and gospel, and by the end of the 2010s had accumulated six number one U.K. singles as a headliner: "Money on My Mind," "Stay with Me," and "Lay Me Down," followed by the Academy Award-winning James Bond theme "Writing's on the Wall," "Too Good at Goodbyes," and the Calvin Harris collaboration "Promises." The singer entered the next decade with a handful of additional Top 20 U.K. singles that led to 2020's Love Goes, followed by the Grammy-winning "Unholy" and its parent album, 2023's Gloria.

Before their commercial breakthrough at the age of 21, the London-born singer and songwriter balanced their studies and music, sang in choirs and in bands, and performed in musical theater productions. They developed a passionate approach to singing inspired by their Catholic upbringing and numerous soul legends, and in the late 2000s headlined a couple low-profile independent singles, "Bad Day All Week" and "When It's Alright." Smith was barely out of their teens when, in late 2012, they reached a much larger audience as the featured vocalist on Disclosure's "Latch." A powerful and loping mixture of U.K. garage and contemporary dance-pop, the song went to number 11 in the U.K., where it also went platinum. Over in the U.S., it took significantly longer to take hold, but eventually hit number seven there and was certified platinum three times over. Read more @All Music.com (Click Here)

Cheat Codes
@NOTO Houston

Friday 9/8/2023 10:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Neil Z. Yeung] Los Angeles-based electronic trio Cheat Codes deliver floor-filling, radio-ready bites of pop-friendly house in a vein similar to the Chainsmokers, Seeb, and Sigala. They built a steady following in the late 2010s with hit singles such as "Sex" with Kris Kross Amsterdam, "Feels Great" with Fetty Wap and CVBZ, and "No Promises" with Demi Lovato. The latter track became their first U.S. Top 40 and was certified platinum in the U.S., Australia, and across Europe. Maintaining their presence on the Dance charts, they issued a steady stream of singles, many of them appearing on their EPs Level 1 and 2. In 2021, the group released the first two volumes of their three-part debut full-length, Hellraisers, Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, with Pt. 3 arriving in 2022. The country-influnced One Night in Nashville appeared in early 2023.

Influenced by the likes of Avicii and Swedish House Mafia, Cheat Codes got together in the 2010s. Each of the group's three members -- Matthew Russell, Trevor Dahl, and Kevin Ford -- has deep roots in L.A., working on individual projects before joining forces as Cheat Codes (Dahl once performed as singer/songwriter Pluginstereo). Their different backgrounds helped inform Cheat Codes' stylistically varied sound, which can range from warm pop to outright big house bangers. After the release of "Visions," they quickly followed with the tropical-tinged "Don't Say No" (featuring Dresses), "Senses" (featuring Lostboycrow), and "Adventure" (featuring Evan Gartner). As they gained exposure on social media and spins on streaming services, they joined the Chainsmokers on tour.

Additional Cheat Codes singles continued to drop in 2016, when they unveiled a pair of global hits: the Top Ten, multi-platinum "Sex" featuring Kris Kross Amsterdam and the U.K. favorite "Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On)" with Dante Klein. The following year they released their biggest feature yet, "No Promises" with Demi Lovato on vocals, and embarked on the No Promises world tour, which brought them to the U.S., Europe, and Australia. The single was certified platinum in Australia, the U.S., and around Europe, earning the trio their first Top 40 entry on the Billboard Hot 100. They followed their Lovato hit with "Feels Great," which featured Fetty Wap and CVBZ, and "Put Me Back Together" with Kiiara. In 2018, singles such as "NSFW" with Danny Quest and "Balenciaga" maintained their exposure, while the trio provided remixes for high-profile singles by Thirty Seconds to Mars ("Dangerous Night"), U2 ("Love Is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way"), and Sean Paul ("Mad Love").  Read more @All Music.com (Click Here)

Dance Gavin Dance

Friday 9/8/2023 5:30 PM

[From All Music.com-Corey Apar] Volatile post-hardcore outfit Dance Gavin Dance deliver thrashing, emo-leaning anthems performed over the years by a frequently shifting lineup anchored by stalwarts Will Swan (lead guitar, vocals) and Matt Mingus (drums). Signed to Rise Records since their 2006 debut, the Sacramento-based band steadily climbed the charts over a series of albums and mainstream success found them in the mid-2010s. Ten years into their career, 2016's Mothership landed at number 13 on the Billboard 200 with its 2018 follow-up, Artificial Selection, performing nearly as well at number 15. Dance Gavin Dance headed into their next decade with 2020's Afterburner and, following more lineup changes, 2022's Jackpot Juicer.

Dance Gavin Dance
We Own The Night

Formed in 2005, the band originally comprised vocalists Jonny Craig and Jonathan Mess, guitarists Will Swan and Sean O'Sullivan, bassist Eric Lodge, and drummer Matt Mingus. Based on their self-released debut EP Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean, Dance Gavin Dance signed with Rise Records in 2006 who then remastered and re-released the EP. Their first full-length, Downtown Battle Mountain, arrived the next year featuring production Kris Crummett who would go on to become a frequent collaborator with the band. Before releasing their self-titled sophomore follow-up in 2008, Craig left the band and was briefly replaced by Kurt Travis. Mess and Lodge also parted ways with the band, with Swan taking over screaming vocals and Jason Ellis as the new bassist. Happiness, their third album, was released in 2009. The lineup changes continued the next year, with Mess and Lodge returning; they brought along guitarist Josh Benton. Jonny Craig returned for a moment, relieving Travis of his vocal duties. That incarnation of the band released Downtown Battle Mountain II, the sequel to their debut.
