Counting Crows
"Banshee Season Tour"
with Dashboard Confessional
@Smart Financial Center

Saturday 8/19/2023 7:30 PM

[From All Music.com-Stephen Thomas Erlewine] With their angst-filled hybrid of Van Morrison, the Band, and R.E.M., Counting Crows achieved mainstream success almost overnight in 1994. Behind their breakout single, "Mr. Jones," the Bay Area group's debut album, August and Everything After, went multi-platinum, earning a slew of Grammy Award nominations and setting them up as one of the more prominent acts of the mid-'90s. Their roots-driven approach to alt-rock struck a chord with fans of classic rock, and they've managed to carry their initial success well into 21st century with albums like 1996's chart-topping Recovering the Satellites and 2002's Hard Candy, as well as the 2004 hit "Accidentally in Love." While Counting Crows' recorded output slowed somewhat in the 2010s, they still managed a certain amount of prestige and respect, thanks in part to 2016's well-received Somewhere Under Wonderland. After a six-year gap, they delivered the 2021 EP Butter Miracle, Suite One.

Counting Crows - Hanginaround w/Dashboard Confessional - Banshee Season Tour - 6/21/23 Milwaukee, WI

Formed in San Francisco in 1991, Counting Crows initially began as an acoustic duo featuring vocalist/songwriter Duritz and guitarist/producer David Bryson. Keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, bassist Matt Malley, and drummer Steve Bowman soon came aboard, with guitarist David Immerglück filling in as a session player before joining full-time in the late '90s. From the start, the group's buzz was strong, and on the strength of their early demos, a multi-label bidding war ensued, with Geffen ultimately emerging as victor. Produced by T-Bone Burnett, their 1993 debut, August and Everything After, was a dark and somber record, driven by Duritz's morose lyrics and expressive vocals. While still relatively unknown, the band filled in for the absent Van Morrison at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, where they were introduced by an enthusiastic Robbie Robertson. Not long after, the album's only uptempo song, "Mr. Jones," became a Top Ten hit and effectively launched the group to stardom. Critical praise and Grammy nominations soon followed. Lyle Lovett
and His Large Band
@Hobby Center
Sarofim Hall

Saturday 8/19/2023 8:00 PM

[From All Music.com-Stephen Thomas Erlewine] An heir to such eccentric literary Texas troubadours as Guy Clark, Walter Hyatt, and Townes Van Zandt, Lyle Lovett laid the groundwork for the alternative country and Americana movements with his eponymous 1986 debut and its 1987 successor, Pontiac. Filled with incisive character studies, lyrical ballads, and dry wit, the two albums established Lovett as a distinctive singer/songwriter whose appeal extended far outside of country. Already rooted in the dusty eclecticism of Texas country, a subgenre where folk intertwined with Western swing, Lovett expanded his musical reach with Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, a 1989 album where he showcased a supporting band well-versed in swing and jump blues. He reached the apex of his popularity in the early '90s with the albums Joshua Judges Ruth and I Love Everybody crossing over to an adult-oriented pop audience, while 1996's The Road to Ensenada won the Grammy for Best Country Album. Lovett's songwriting and recording slowed in the 21st century -- he took an extended ten-year hiatus between Release Me in 2012 and 12th of June in 2022 -- but maintained on outsized presence on the Americana and Texas country scenes, thanks to regular performances with his Large Band.

Lyle Lovett - 12th of June

Born in Klein, Texas -- a small town (named after his great-grandfather, a Bavarian weaver named Adam Klein) that later became a Houston suburb -- Lovett was raised on his family's horse ranch. He didn't begin his musical career until he began writing songs while attending Texas A&M University in the late '70s, where he studied journalism and German. While he was a student, he performed covers and original songs at local folk festivals and clubs. As a graduate student, he traveled to Germany to study and continued to write and play while he was in Europe. However, he didn't begin to pursue a musical career in earnest until he returned to America in the early '80s. Read more @All Music.com (Click Here)

Sean McConnell
@The Heights Theatre

Saturday 8/19/2023 7:00 PM

[From seanmcconnell.com] Sean McConnell is a man unafraid of asking questions of the situations in his life. It manifests itself from the moment he wakes each day, on a small farm outside Franklin, Tenn., a very different environment than his upbringing in Massachusetts.

“No, I didn’t grow up like that at all,” McConnell laughs. “But my wife grew up on a farm. She’s more used to it than I am.

“We’ve got pigs and chickens and some acreage.We are growing a garden and such.The older we get, the more we want to just kind of be self-sufficient. We enjoy getting our hands dirty and getting out into the woods and taking care of animals. It brings us a lot of joy and grounds us.”

A central feature of the small, well-appointed house is a wood-burning stove that provides much of the heat to the structure. There is both beauty and function in the process of maintaining the stove’s output in the colder months, something that parallels McConnell’s work in his studio a stone’s throw away, asking questions of both his own work and those with which he collaborates.

Sean McConnell
"Price Of Love"

“Time seems to breed creativity, especially when there’s very little else going on,” McConnell says of the stillness brought about by the events of 2020. “Other than this record of mine, I’ve produced records for four other artists out of my studio.

“This period has forced everybody, internally and externally, globally and socially, to take a good look at our lives and examine it,” he continues. “Everything from our marriages to our workout routines,social injustice to planet politics and religion, spirituality and our internal environment…everything has come to the surface. It’s been the tipping point of so many things right now, so obviously that bleeds over into art and music.”

If there’s an overworked word surrounding the previous year, it’s been “uncertain.” (“Unprecedented” might run a close second.)

There comes a moment we must admit to ourselves that we don’t have a clear picture of what’s happening around us. Read more @sean mcconnell.com (Click Here)
