Beijing Dance Theater - Tres poemas

Humankind has long searched for a spiritual home, a place to rest our souls. Without this spiritual homesickness, we are lost in the corporeal. Despite our best intentions to examine life from the perspective of beauty and to critique the world with our experience. We need to re-consider where our spiritual guide originates.

These three works are bring together the most representative contemporary ballet repertoire of Ms. Wang Yuanyuan over the past 15 years, bringing to life the creative and emotional arc of the time. Together they describe an artistic curve with surprising consistency: disparate themes coalesce through the gravity of strong emotion; the works lead the audience to experience the hidden but unclouded essence of life, its ceaseless energy and emotional core.

Chris Tucker
@Bayou Music Center

Saturday 11/4/2023 8:00 PM

[From imbd.com]At one point in time, Chris Tucker was the highest-paid actor in Hollywood.

Tucker born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Mary Louise (Bryant) and Norris Tucker, who owned a janitorial service. After graduating from high school, Tucker made a change to move to Hollywood from Georgia to pursue a career in show business. He found himself a frequent guest on the Def Comedy Jam (1992). Tucker was noted for doing exceptionally "clean", non-vulgar stand-up comedy routines. Tucker states his inspirations for comedy are Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor.

Tucker made his film debut in House Party 3 (1994), along side stars such as Bernie Mac, Marques Houston, and Khandi Alexander. In 1995 Tucker appeared in one of his most notable and hilarious films, Friday (1995), alongside Ice Cube. Tucker's character, Smokey, was a drug addict who was an energetic and outlandish person. Films such as Friday (1995) showed Tucker's television-comedy styling was very different from his stand-up. In 1995, Tucker also appeared in in another film, Dead Presidents (1995).

In 1997 was the busiest year of Tucker's career. He starred in three hit movies all in the same year: The Fifth Element (1997), Money Talks (1997), and Jackie Brown (1997).

In 1998, Tucker got a role to star along-side Jackie Chan. The movie was Rush Hour (1998) and it grossed more than $200 million worldwide. This resulted in two additional sequels, Rush Hour 2 (2001) and Rush Hour 3 (2007). In 2006, Tucker got a deal on his Rush Hour 3 (2007) contract that paid $25 million, making him the highest-paid actor in Hollywood at that time.

In 2001, Tucker also was in a music video with friend, pop legend Michael Jackson, in the music video, "You Rock My World."

Nation of Language
@White Oak Music Hall
Upstairs

Saturday 11/4/2023 8:00 PM

[From all Music.com-Marcy Donelson] The icy, post-punk-inspired synth pop of Nation of Language is the creation of Ian Devaney, who was influenced by the early work of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Taking the project in its own refined, melancholy direction, he and his bandmates presented Nation of Language's full-length debut, Introduction, Presence, in 2020. The project peppered in earlier Krautrock and experimental electronic influences on subsequent albums, including the next year's A Way Forward and 2023's Strange Disciple, the latter of which allowed for more live instruments in arrangements.

The seeds of Nation of Language were planted when the label release of a second album by Devaney's onetime high-school band the Static Jacks fell through in 2013, ultimately leaving him back at his parents' in New Jersey. His father played OMD's "Electricity," a song Devaney was familiar with but hadn't heard since he was a schoolkid, in the car one day. Hearing it inspired him to try to write something similar, as an exercise. The resulting track was "Laudanum," which ended up on Nation of Language's eponymous debut EP in 2015.

Over the next few years, a Brooklyn-based Devaney continued to write and release songs for the project's rotating lineup, including 2016's "What Does the Normal Man Feel?" and 2017's "Indignities," both of which were produced by Abe Seiferth (Phonograph, Yeasayer). The latter song featured Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, who also joined the band on tour as bassist in the second half of 2017. Other members during this period included Michael Sui-Poi and Andrew Santora, both of the Static Jacks, and Devaney's then-fiancée, Aidan Noell, on synths. Following a tour in support of the Wombats, Nation of Language issued the track "Reality" in mid-2018, then went to work on a full-length debut.

The lineup of Devaney, Noell, and Sue-Poi emerged with the Seiferth-produced Introduction, Presence in May 2020.
