The Houston Jazz Festival presents an unforgettable evening of jazz brilliance, as part of The Houston Jazz Collective’s American Masters Series. This year’s featured artist is none other than Blue Note recording sensation James Francies, joined by Grammy-winning vocalist Bilal and acclaimed audiovisual artist **Ben Heim** for an immersive, multidimensional performance.
Born in Houston in 1995, James Francies grew up in South Park, a neighborhood he describes as "iffy" but full of influence and inspiration. His musical journey began at the age of five when he started taking piano lessons. By junior high, Francies had immersed himself in jazz, developing a deep connection with the genre. He attended the prestigious **High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston**, where he formed a jazz trio at 14, performing in various venues for three years. His dedication to jazz earned him a series of scholarships, eventually leading to a full scholarship at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.
Now a renowned jazz pianist, Francies has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Childish Gambino, Pat Metheny, Drake, and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Known for his innovative sound, *The New York Times* describes Francies as "a pianist with liquid dynamism in his touch," while DownBeat praises his ability to "conjure fascinating nebulae of sound." His rock-solid trio, featuring Burnis Travis and Jeremy Dutton, will be joined by frequent collaborator and acclaimed jazz vocalist Bilal.
Bilal, known for his powerful and genre-defying voice, adds another layer of depth and soul to the performance, making this evening a true celebration of jazz mastery. The night will be further elevated by Ben Heim’s visually stunning artwork, featured in global venues like Times Square and the Reykjavik Winter Lights Festival, transforming the event into a feast for the senses.
