The playback singers are very popular in Indian films. A playback singer is a singer whose singing is pre-recorded for use in movies. Playback singers record songs for soundtracks, and actors or actresses lip-sync the songs for cameras; the actual singer does not appear on the screen.
In her bio, Ghoshal aspired to become a playback singer from an early age at four, she started learning music. At the age of six, she started her formal training in classical music. It was when she was sixteen, she was noticed by the mother of film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali when she entered and won a television singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa (called Sa Re Ga Ma at that time). Following that, she made her Bollywood playback singing debut with Bhansali's romantic drama Devdas, it was 2002 for which she received a National Film Award, a Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer and a Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent.
