Sunday 12/5/2021

Galveston Historical Foundation present their annual Dickens on The Strand this weekend, December 3rd through Sunday December 5, 2021. This will be the 48th year the foundation will be producing the festival. The annual festival is a holiday tradition with great family programming, live entertainment an special events.

The organizers say, "Brush off your bowlers and prepare your petticoats as Galveston Historical Foundation presents this 48th annual Dickens on The Strand. Held the first weekend in December, the annual festival is a holiday tradition with great family programming, live entertainment, special events, and more."

Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties.

The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on four stages, new additions like Tiny Tim’s Play Land, Shopkeeper Skills Village, and roaming characters throughout the festival.

Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations, and gift items.

Dickens on The Strand's Entertainers and Guests

Oliver Dickens

Oliver ‘Ollie’ Dickens is a great-great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens who lives in North London. He is a British actor who recently graduated from LAMDA, one of the finest drama training academies in the world, having previously graduated from the University of York with a BA(Hons) in Writing, Directing and Performance. Ollie returns this year, after a 20 year absence, to perform his great ancestor’s best-loved Christmas tales. He is the latest in a long tradition of Dickens descendants to participate in the festival and is greatly looking forward to committing the same level of energy, intensity and flair to his readings as his great-great-great grandfather would have done!

Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and merged with a new organization formed in 1954 as a non-profit entity devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties. GHF embraces a broader vision of history and architecture that encompasses advancements in environmental and natural sciences and their intersection with historic buildings and coastal life and conceives of history as an engaging story of individual lives and experiences on Galveston Island from the 19th century to the present day.
